The room was almost black as onyx, but the windows provided light. Silence. Students around the room suddenly whispered in hushed tones, and then there was a faint, a very-very faint high pitched scream that chilled my spine. Voices overlapped voices, but all I could hear is that small, quiet scream. Not everyone was aware of the scream, and those who were aware didn't seem bothered by it.
I stood still, waiting as time passed by endlessly, waiting for the screaming to stop. My friend had noticed too, for she cringed at the eerie sound. I covered my ears to try to escape the haunting screech. The teacher told everyone to calm down, but still the wailing continued and drowned out all of the other voices as if it was a whisper lost in a mass of sound.
I closed my eyes to perish the remaining light in the room, and focused on the music playing quietly in the background. I tried to pay no mind to the mysterious continuous screech, but it would not stop. No matter how many distractions there were, it always seemed to find a way to my ears. Finally I opened my eyes, and searched the room, trying to find what was disturbing the peaceful room. I cautiously inspected in the dark, as if it was an I spy game, making sure I didn't miss the source of the sound. Then my eyes landed on her outline in the darkness.
She was leaning against the brick wall with her right hand placed on something above her. I shuddered as the wailing came again, and I dropped my eyes to the floor. The bell would ring soon, and I will finally be able to retreat from the shrill noise. Patiently, very-very patiently I waited, trying to control my temper, trying not to break. Suddenly the bell rang, and I jumped up and headed towards the door before I could hear another wail. But before I could leave, the lights flickered for a millisecond, and I caught a glimpse of a girl with her hand placed on a chalkboard.
